Top 6 performances of European athletes at the 2018 Winter Olympics

From February 9 to February 25, the Winter Olympics took place in Pyeongchang (South Korea). The competition gathered more than 2,900 athletes from 92 countries, to compete in 15 sports (Alpine skiing, Biathlon, Snowboarding…).

This year, Norway literally took over the Winter Olympics by reaching a new medal record for one country. Marit Bjørgen (picture) brought the last medal to set Norway’s new record with 39 medals. Furthermore, Norway sent “only” 109 athletes while Switzerland sent 169, Canada 226 and United States 242! Congratulations to Norway! Germany (31) and Canada (29) are completing the medal podium. More than 20 European countries won at least one medals, congratulations!

?? Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot gave an amazing performance and earned the highest score ever recorded in pairs free skate. At the age of 34, Aliona Savchenko won her first gold medal in her fifth Olympics.

?? Ester Ledecka won the gold medal in the super-G  by 0.01 seconds, competing on skis borrowed from American star Mikaela Shiffrin. Later in the competition she became the first woman snowboarder to win the gold medal in skiing and snowboarding.

?? Martin Fourcade and Simon Schempp crazy sprint finish in Biathlon. In the previous Olympics (2014) Martin Fourcade lost the gold medal by only three centimeters, this time he was ahead to claim gold and become France’s most successful Olympian of all time.

?? Oleksandr Abramenko flies to freestyle ski aerials gold. With this amazing jump, Oleksandr Abramenko became the first Ukrainian male athlete to collect an Olympic Winter Games gold medal.

?? Arianna Fontana wins gold in the 500-meter short-track speedskating in a dramatic photo finish. With this new medal, Arianna Fontana became the most decorated female short track skater ever.

?? Simen Hegstad Krueger wins gold in skiathlon after early crash. At the beginning of the race, after only 100 meters, Simen Hegstad Krueger fell and though that competition was over for him. Despite his rough start he managed to win the race by 8 seconds.


 

The next Winter Olympics will be held in 2022 in Beijing (China). Beijing will become the first city ever to host both Summer and Winter Olympics!
