Vakıfbank S.K. win 2018 Volleyball Women’s Champions League

Vakıfbank Spor Kulübü (Istanbul, Turkeywin once more the CEV Women’s Champions League in Bucharest. After their win in 2017, Turkish club did it again and defeated the host club CSM Volei Alba BLAJ (Sibiu, Romania) in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-17) victory!

In the final game, they played against CSM Volei Alba BLAJ. Even with the support of crowd, the Romanian team couldn’t keep up the pace of Vakıfbank S.K. The Turkish team was on a roll and won the game in 3 sets without any difficulties.

Italian coach of Vakıfbank S.K., Giovanni Guidetti, was confident in his club and his players before the Final four: “We are Vakıfbank. We cannot hide away from our mission to win every tournament that we play”.

The last time a club won the trophy 2 times in a row was an Italian club of Bergamo in 2009 and 2010. The Turkish club now has 4 titles in this competition after winning in 2011, 2013, 2017 and now 2018! It is the fourth most successful club in terms of trophies in the competition.

Here’s a short summary of their 2018 Champion’s league campagin: After finishing first during the league round, they crushed Voléro Zürich during the playoff (0-3 / 0-3) in a two-legged home and away game. During the Final Four, they won their semifinal against the Italian club Imoco Volley Conegliano. This game was intense and tough for the Turkish team because they had to play a fifth set to go to the final. After having a hard time to defeat the Italian club, it looked like the most difficult part has been done. In final, they crushed the Romanian club and claimed their first back-to-back championship in this competition!

Gözde Kirdar has been elected MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the tournament. It was the last game of her career. The Turkish legend was playing for Vakıfbank S.K. since she has 14 years old (1999)! You can see in the after game interview the emotion but also the pride that she has after winning a second Champion’s league in a row.
