“Roma”, “the Favorite”, Rami Malek… The big winners of the 2019 Bafta

BAFTA 2019 took place at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on Sunday 10 February 2019. This years ceremony host was Joanna Lumley and ceremony featured performances by Cirque du Soleil and Jess Gillam.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is a world-leading independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally. BAFTA counts more than 7,500 members, who are considered to have made a significant contribution to the big and small screen in the UK over the past five years. But the votes are taken only by 6,500 members except the winner of the Bafta for the best hope which is a result of the public vote.

This years edition was absolutely taken over by the movie ‘The Favourite’, a period drama placed placed in the early 18th century, that won seven BAFTAs in the following categories:

  • Outstanding British Film
  • Leading Actress – Olivia Colman
  • Supporting Actress – Rachel Weisz
  • Original Screenplay – Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara
  • Costume Design – Sandy Powell 
  • Production Design – Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton
  • Make Up & Hair – Nadia Stacey 

Although ‘The Favourite’ won the most awards, a movie ‘Rome’ won Best Film BAFTA and three more awards. ‘Rome’ is adrama depicting a year in the life of a middle-class family’s maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s. Alfonso Cuarón won in all of these categories:

  • Director
  • Film Not in the English Language
  • Cinematography

Leading Actor award was given to Rami Malik  for his performance as Freddie Mercury in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ while Supporting Actor went to Mahershala Ali for his performance in ‘Green Book’.

Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley, producing partners who created some of the most iconic British films like Company of Wolves, Little Voice andScandal, were presented with Special Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema.

And last but not least, The EE Rising Star Award went to Letitia Wright. She has played roles in several British TV series, including Top Boy, Coming Up, Chasing Shadows and the Black Mirror episode “Black Museum”.
