Eurovision 2019: Duncan Laurence won the contest for the Netherlands

Duncan Laurence took the first place in 64th edition of Eurovision Song Contest, making the Netherlands a host for Eurovision 2020. Duncan gathered 492 points with his song Arcade, reaching the top of Eurovision leaderboard. The Netherlands wins their fifth victory and the first since 44 years!

Duncan explained that Arcade was not written for the contest but in fact, he wrote it a long time ago “Since Arcade I’ve written many songs, but somehow Arcade feels like the centre of all of them. It started my journey to wanting to write songs that can really mean something to people. My career thus far has mainly been behind the scenes writing for other artists and defining my own sound. It feels good to now step into the light and share my story. I want to reach out to people with my music, possibly even help them.”

Italian singer, Mahmood found himself in second place with 465 points. In his song, Mahmood talks about a toxic relationship with a money-obsessed parent, the one he has with his own father, who left the family home when he was 6 years old.

Third place was taken by Russia and Sergey Lazarev with the melancholic song Scream.

Switzerland and Norway complete the Top 5. Sweden, Azerbaijan, North Macedonia, Australia, and Iceland finish the Top 10. Notice than Sweden was the leader after the professional jury vote and Norway win the public vote with a total of 291 points!

Madonna was a guest of the evening, performing her hit Like a virgin and a new song Future. Her performance was also marked by political statement when the star’s backing dancers were noticed wearing Israel and Palestine flags. But Madonna was not the only one raising this political issue during the night. Iceland’s’ representatives, band Hatari, displayed the Palestinian flag during voting results announcement.
