Last weekend the final four (best four team of the season in Europe) were competing for the most coveted trophy of the year. In front of 9.500 fans mostly supporting Istanbul, Sopron never lost their nerve to win in the Ulker Sports Arena. Thanks to their victory in the Euroleague final against Fenerbahçe (60-55), the Hungarians of Sopron were crowned European champions for the first time on Sunday.
After a first apparition and a defeat againt the russian club Ekaterinburg in Euroleague final in 2018, Sopron became the first-ever Hungarian team (men and women) to lift the biggest of Euro Crowns.
France’s Gabby Williams (1m80, 25 y/o) was elected Euroleague MVP thanks to her strong performance in both in attack (16 pts) and in defense, silencing the main offensive weapon in the Fenerbahçe Safiport ranks (Alina Iagupova). After a strong performance in the semi-final against Perfumerias Avenida, Williams averaged 14.5 points, 5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game in the final four.
During the after game interview, Williams highlighted the fact that she wanted to play Fenerbahçe in the final to beat them on their home-court. “I have played in front of maybe some bigger crowds in the States, but they’re not Turkish and the atmosphere is never like this was. We enjoyed the challenge of trying to silence them and it only motivated us more,“
