144 minutes • Drama

At the beginning of the 30s in Hamburg, an ambitious comedian Hendrik Höfgen dreams of glory, even though he is playing in just a small theatrical group. In order to make his dream come true, he gives up his black mistress to marry the daughter of Councilor Bruckner. This decision was not random and soon he’ll benefit from the political influence of his father-in-law. Hendrik gets engaged in the State Theater of Berlin, where he finally interprets Mephisto in the Goethe’s “Faust”, but when the Nazis come to power, his whole career is at stake. To continue his path to become a star, Höfgen has to back away from his past convictions and subject his art to the new regime…
