Hidden gems of Zagreb: Street Art

Zagreb offers all kinds of attractions, something for everyone, easy to find. History, art, nature, food, shopping, night life, you name it – it’s just over there. Ban Jelačić Square, St. Mark’s Church, Tkalča Street, Maksimir Park, Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, Dolac Market, Ilica Street… these are just a few of many beautiful things to see and experience. But if you wish to scratch beneath the surface and get to know another face of Zagreb, we suggest you to take a peek in some of the hidden corners of the city where Street Art takes place. There are only two things you’ll need in your search for ‘Walls of inspiration’: comfortable pair of shoes and the map we made for you.

There are many great artists making an impressive work around streets of Zagreb but here we chose to introduce two of them to you, so meet Lonac and OKO.

Lonac is one the most known Croatian street artists. Over the years he became internationally recognized for his murals all over the world. He creates an amazing street art by using spray paint technique. This technique allowes him to create harmonious and hyperrealistic artwork. Transforming neglected walls into art is his specialty and that’s exactly what he did with “Oh Barbie” and “Blast from the past”.

OKO (meaning the Eye in Croatian) is one of the most talented Croatian street artists. You can see some of her work around Zagreb streets but also in the Zagreb’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Her trademark is to mix well dressed human figures with animal heads. She transformed the quote “Knowledge is the key that unlocks all the doors” into this amazing mural.

Our recommendation also goes to this great short documentary about the most famous Croatian street artists. Check out what Lonac, Lunar, Šumski and Chez186 have to say about their work, what it means for them and how they feel about it.

” MY PERSONAL DEFINITION OF ART WOULD BE A LONG AND SUSTAINED WORK WHICH GOES IN THE DIRECTION OF PROGRESS BY A PERSON WHO HAS SOMETHING TO COMMUNICATE. AN ARTIST WHO ABSORBS EXPERIENCES AND FILTERS THEM, IN TIME HIS WORK BECOMES MORE COMPLEX AND BETTER. ”
